HP PCs - Partitioning and Naming Difficult Drives (Windows vii)

This certificate applies to HP and Compaq PCs with Windows seven.

Understanding drives, partitions, and volumes in Windows 7

A partition is an area of a hard disk drive that can be formatted and assigned a drive alphabetic character. On a hard disk, a volume is a formatted primary partition or logical drive. The terms partition and volume are oftentimes used interchangeably.

HP and Compaq computers with Windows seven have difficult deejay drives that contain at least two partitions: the main partition for Windows and your piece of work, and a recovery partition to restore the figurer back the way it came from the manufactory. Here is a listing of some of the partitions you may notice on your hard drive:

  • The main partition, usually labeled with the letter of the alphabet C, contains the system files, plan files, and usable file storage infinite.

  • A recovery sectionalisation, usually drive letter D and labeled RECOVERY, contains organization recovery information in case the files on the C partition are damaged or unusable.

  • A hidden partition may exist called SYSTEM. A Organization partition is used by Windows to store protected files for troubleshooting and should not exist altered.

  • Your computer may also have a division called "HP_TOOLS". If so, this partition contains HP tools for UEFI that you lot can use to help troubleshoot boot problems or test for hardware failures.

caution:

When using the steps in this certificate, do not delete the SYSTEM, Recovery or FACTORY_IMAGE partition or use it for file storage. Doing then may prevent boot troubleshooting or recovery in the issue your computer encounters a major problem.

Adding a new drive alphabetic character in Windows 7

To create more storage infinite or to view another drive, add together a new drive letter of the alphabet to the computer using ane of the following methods:

  • Install an additional difficult drive - If yous need more than space for photos, videos, music, or other files, add a new hard disk drive or USB storage device. An boosted hard deejay can be inside the computer (internal) or external, attached to a USB connector on the computer. When you add together a new storage device, Windows automatically assigns a new letter.

    note:

To add an internal hard drive, the figurer must take an empty bulldoze bay. Well-nigh mid belfry or larger desktop PCs take space for one or more than additional hard drives. Nearly all notebooks, Slimline, and AiO computers do non have space for an internal drive.

  • Sectionalization the existing drive - If y'all do not need more file storage space simply would like to view another drive in Windows, create some other partitioning on the existing hard deejay. This might exist useful if you lot demand to share files on a drive but desire to forbid access to your personal files by keeping them on some other drive.

This method does not add more space, but re-allocates some of the empty space on the existing hard disk drive into another partition. This infinite is so treated equally another drive and labeled with its own bulldoze alphabetic character.
